NEVER do this on a CHIMNEY!! chimney leaks water

There are things you should never do on a chimney. Avoiding these mistakes will preserve your chimney. To prevent your chimney from leaking water, you need to understand what not to do before you attempt to make repairs
Chimneys basically have 3 sections, the crown, body, and flashing. The 2 areas that are common to leaks are the crown and the flashing.
The crown for the most part is just a thin slab of cement that is poured on top of the bricks. This cement slab will crack away from the bricks over time causing leaks.
The flashing is made out of copper or aluminum and is inserted into a shallow groove or slot into the side of the chimney. most contractors will use caulking to seal the flashing to the face of the chimney. This never lasts and eventually causes leaks.
